A new chapter of a success story: SAACKE supplies low-NOx burners for the second heating plant at Stadtwerke Flensburg, Germany

Customized burner implementation compliant with legal emission guidelines

Back in 2012, SAACKE GmbH made an important contribution to the modernization of a reserve heating plant in Flensburg, Germany. Now this success story is starting a new chapter: SAACKE has again supplied burners and components for the modernization of a heating plant at the Stadtwerke Flensburg public utility. The additional goal this time is to reduce the emissions of district heating boilers. The chosen means for this was ten low-NOx burners from the TEMINOX series, commissioned and installed by the boiler manufacturer WULFF & UMAG Energy Solutions GmbH based in Husum, Germany. Therefore 11 of a total of 20 of this manufacturer's identical double flume-tube boilers in Flensburg are now equipped with the latest technology.

The order also included combustion air fans with sound insulation booths, oil pressure booster stations and ETAMATIC burner control systems as well as the SAACKE light oil burners. All equipment was delivered in June 2017. A subsequent retrofit for the natural gas firing operation was prepared. “One major advantage of TEMINOX is that it can be flexibly configured. During the design phase, this enabled us to take into account individual burner adjustments such as additional fittings, together with the customer,” explains Olaf Uhl, Sales Engineer at SAACKE.

Reliability and trust are crucial
“With a more than 100-year-long history, Stadtwerke Flensburg counts on long-term supplier relation-ships. As the last collaboration between Stadtwerke and SAACKE was so successful, the energy supplier is relying on our skills this time as well,” says Uhl. In addition, the long-established WULFF & UMAG Energy Systems as general contractor bring their expertise in the field of plant construction to the conversion of the five double flume-tube boilers in the fjord city. WULFF & UMAG were awarded the contract for the modernization of the reserve heating plant by Stadtwerke Flensburg GmbH follow-ing a restricted call for tenders in December 2016.

Clear compliance with NOx emission limit values
For the first order in 2012, SAACKE carried out the complete retrofitting and automation of the "En-gelsbyer Strasse" reserve heating plant together with twelve new TEMINOX burners. The plant has since been used for district heat supply during peak winter loads or in case of disruptions. During light oil firing, SAACKE achieved values significantly below the legally prescribed NOx limit values of 200 mg/m³ with < 140 mg/m³ at 3 % O2. On the basis of these empirical values, the current modernization project in the north reserve heating plant is guaranteed to remain below the stipulated emission values of 150 mg/m3 – < 140 mg/m3<.

The SAACKE mission:
most available power
at lowest possible
emissions.
