As part of the conversion of the supertanker BW Nisa into a floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO), an energy-efficient and low-emission plant system was required. In addition to maximum technical reliability, global project coordination also played a key role in enabling the timely deployment in the Brazilian offshore production area Papa Terra.

350 million barrels of oil are to be extracted here by around 2030. To this end, Bergesen Worldwide Offshore (BWO) converted the supertanker BW Nisa into the FPSO unit P-63 in collaboration with SAACKE. SAACKE has already implemented several projects for the world's second-largest FPSO operator in the past, with BWO consistently expressing high satisfaction with the quality and emission performance of the systems.

In addition to operational modernization, global project management from a single source was also required. How should the plant areas be designed? How will the material flows proceed? These are questions that are of particular importance due to the lack of space on a ship. The entire SAACKE Group was involved in P-63, from the cross-national coordination and engineering in Bremen to the production in China and Croatia to the assembly in the Chinese shipyard and the commissioning in Rio Grande, Brazil.

The SAACKE solution in detail
Specifically, SAACKE modernized the boiler system for the ship's existing propulsion system to make it ready for a two-month crossing from the Chinese shipyard to Rio Grande, near the oil production area. For this purpose the two existing 75 t/h boilers were stripped and relined. To generate the process steam required for FPSO operation on site, the boilers were each equipped with three dual-fuel DDZG burners including new fittings, steam system instruments and control system (fail safe PLC system). The SAACKE components thus generate superheated steam for the turbine drive on the one hand and the necessary process steam for the treatment and stabilization of the crude oil on deck of the ship on the other hand.
Thanks to state-of-the-art firing equipment, the FPSO Unit P-63 is equipped for 15 to 20 years of service at sea - without dry docking. The conversion including international project coordination was realized by SAACKE in close cooperation with the customer. After a transition phase, the FPSO will be handed over to the operator Petrobras.
