Hydrogen is one of the cleanest marine fuels imaginable. If it is produced from renewable energies ("green hydrogen"), its use is completely CO₂-free. In combination with fuel cell technology, ships can be operated with virtually no noise or emissions. The challenges lie in the complex storage – either under high pressure or in a deep-frozen state – and in its limited availability to date. It is increasingly being tested as a propulsion solution for smaller ships, ferries, and special-purpose vessels.
