Marine diesel, also known as MDO (marine diesel oil) or MGO (marine gas oil), is a widely used marine fuel that can contain both distillate and smaller proportions of residual oils. It is significantly cleaner than heavy fuel oil, causes lower emissions, and in many cases meets the IMO requirements for emission limits. The fuel can be used directly without additional processing and is suitable for a wide variety of ship types. The price is higher than that of heavy fuel oil, but operators benefit from easier handling and lower maintenance costs. Marine diesel is mainly used in coastal waters and ECA zones.
