ULSFO (Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil) is a special marine fuel with a sulfur content of less than 0.1%. The mixture of distilled and residue-rich components meets the requirements of the IMO 2020 regulations and enables significantly lower-emission ship operation compared to conventional heavy fuel oil. ULSFO is used in particular in emission control areas (ECAs), as strict limits for sulfur emissions apply there. The fuel scores with lower SOx emissions, but is more expensive than HFO and can lead to stability problems if stored improperly or mixed with other fuels.
