Two double-flame tube boilers, each with an output of 12.5 MW, supply around 100 buildings at Dortmund Technical University with hot water. Due to the age of the system and stricter legal requirements regarding NOₓ emissions, there was an urgent need for action to ensure that the heating system continued to comply with the law.
Implementation of two TEMINOX burners per boiler including associated gas fitting lines, se@vis burner control system, combustion air blower and O2 and speed controls.
SAACKE replaced the complete combustion system as part of a modernization. The four old burners supplied by a competitor could no longer meet the prescribed pollutant guidelines and so were replaced by SAACKE ultra-low NOx TEMINOX burners. The modernization was implemented with a very short downtime: after just two weeks, the system had been converted and the customer was able to use the now future-proof system for its heat supply again.
Emissions significantly below 44th BImSchV
In the following year, two of the modernized natural gas burners were even equipped again by SAACKE with a new burner head developed in the meantime to enable the customer to achieve the maximum emissions reduction. The plant thus also easily meets and undercuts the specifications of the 44th BImSchV, which is now in force. Specifically, the burners installed in 2019 deliver values of <70 mg/m³ NOx at 3 % O2. Under the same conditions,
the new burner heads from 2020 achieve even better results of <50 mg/m³ NOx, well below the legal requirements of <100 mg/m³NOx. And this despite preheated combustion air (approx. 80 °C) and without secondary measures such as exhaust gas recirculation.
The SAACKE solution in detail
In the course of the modernization, the air supply including measurement and control technology was also renewed. Thanks to the frequency-controlled blowers and heat exchangers for combustion air preheating and O2 control,
the system meets the highest efficiency criteria in terms of electrical power consumption and fuel efficiency. The control system allows operation and visualization directly at the burner as well as in the control room via touchscreen
displays. All functions can be visualized and controlled via the control system.
- Ultra-low NOx technology for low emissions far below national and international emission standards
- Simple installation, commissioning and maintenance reduce downtime, therefore particularly suitable for new construction and retrofits
- Ready for use on shell and water tube boilers, thermal oil heaters and thermal processing equipment
- Robust and modular design
- Burner is suitable as natural gas, light oil or dual fuel burner with the option of simultaneous operation of two fuels and firing of special fuels
Thanks to good advance planning, the integration of the new components into the existing system was completed flawlessly and within a very short time frame of two weeks. The four TEMINOX burners prove their unrivaled low emissions in practical operation. As a result, the TU Dortmund University is well positioned for the future in terms of heat generation and ensures the continuation of its operational capability against the background of the 44th BImSchV.
